Fiji is a stunning archipelago of more than 300 islands scattered across the Pacific Ocean. The largest island is home to the capital city, Suva. However, most tourists prefer visiting Nadi, which serves as the main gateway to the country due to its international airport and well-developed tourist infrastructure.

This tropical paradise offers a wide range of experiences—from water sports and crystal-clear lagoons to scenic hiking trails. Fiji is especially popular among travelers from Australia and New Zealand. The most convenient way to reach Fiji is by air, with frequent flights from Sydney taking approximately four hours. Fiji is also well connected via Singapore and Bangkok and many other countries as well.

Travelers should note that Fiji tends to get crowded during long weekends in Australia, as many Australians travel there for short holidays. It is advisable to book hotels and rental cars in advance to avoid missing out on good options.

The international airport in Nadi is located about 20 km from Denarau Island, one of the most popular tourist areas in Fiji. Denarau Island features several luxury hotels and resorts, all interconnected and equipped with modern amenities such as golf courses, children’s play areas, restaurants, shopping complexes, and a marina for boat rentals and sea excursions.

Many tourists choose to stay in Denarau due to its convenience and well-developed infrastructure. In contrast, other parts of Fiji are less developed, with limited road connectivity and fewer facilities.

Beaches and Surroundings

The beaches around Nadi, particularly in Denarau Island, are well-maintained and scenic. However, if you venture further out, you may encounter challenges. Some beaches have poor or non-existent access roads, and horse riding activities, though enjoyable, can leave the sand unclean due to droppings.

You will also find several open-air massage stalls along the beaches, where you can enjoy a relaxing 45-minute massage at reasonable prices.

The distance between Nadi and Suva is approximately 200 km, taking about three hours by car. Despite being the capital, Suva is less popular among tourists compared to Nadi, mainly because Nadi offers easier access to beaches, island excursions, and tourist-friendly amenities.

Most hotels in Nadi have dedicated travel desks where you can book a variety of excursions, including both day trips and multi-day island tours.

Local Insights

Fiji is still developing economically, but what it may lack in infrastructure, it more than makes up for with the warmth and friendliness of its people, who are always ready to help visitors.

One important tip to remember:

  • Parking is typically paid in cash, as attendants often do not accept credit cards. It’s advisable to carry some local currency for such situations.

  • Most of the excursions provide lunch 9already included in the package) as well as breakfast if going early morning.

  • Fiji is famous for black pearl and one can get it at pretty cheap rates at the local shops.

  • Castaway Island is nearby - Make reservations in advance
