Jodhpur and Jaisalmer
Both destinations in Rajasthan are true winter paradises, each offering a unique charm that makes them worth visiting at least once in a lifetime. The ideal time to explore them is between October and February, when the weather is pleasant and perfect for sightseeing. In contrast, summers can be extremely harsh due to the proximity of the desert, making daytime travel challenging and uncomfortable.
Jodhpur
How to Travel to Jodhpur
Jodhpur is well connected by air, road, and rail, making it easy to reach from most parts of India. The city has its own airport with regular domestic flights. If travelling from abroad, the most convenient option is to fly into a major Indian hub such as Delhi or Mumbai and then take a domestic connection to Jodhpur. Direct flights are also available from Jaipur.
Jodhpur is equally accessible by road, with reliable state-run buses as well as private transport options connecting it to nearby cities.
Uber and Autos easily available in the City for Exploring
Getting around within the city is hassle-free. Uber cabs and Uber auto-rickshaws (tuk-tuks) are widely available and can be booked easily through the app. For sightseeing within the city or for day trips around Jodhpur, you can also hire a private taxi.
Where to Stay in Jodhpur
Jodhpur offers accommodation options to suit every kind of traveller—from opulent palace hotels to comfortable budget stays. Keep in mind that winter is peak wedding season in North India, so it’s advisable to book your hotel well in advance, as many properties sell out quickly and many of the properties are booked for weddings too.
• Umaid Bhawan Palace - Palace Hotel
The most luxurious hotel in Jodhpur, Umaid Bhawan Palace - still home to the royal family. Once the seat of the former princely state of Jodhpur, a portion of this magnificent palace has been converted into a luxury hotel managed by the Taj Group. The rooms are extremely expensive, but the grandeur and service are truly unmatched.

• RAAS Haveli
Located in the heart of the old city, RAAS is a premium heritage property known for its stunning architecture and design. It offers breathtaking views of the Mehrangarh Fort, making it one of the most sought-after stays for travelers seeking a blend of luxury and history.
Note
Reaching this property is a challenge as it is situated within the old city area where only the autos are allowed during daytime. The taxis and cars are allowed only early morning and late night after 10 pm.
If coming from railway station or airport, please book the car from the hotel as it is easier that way rather than changing to auto before entering the old city.
The cars are banned due to congestion and traffic during daytime in the old city area.
• Taj Hari Mahal
Another excellent Taj property, Taj Hari Mahal features spacious rooms, elegant interiors, and impeccable service. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for luxury at a relatively more accessible price point compared to Ummaid Bhawan Palace. (Can book at Taj Reservations too)
In addition to these, Jodhpur has plenty of budget and mid-range hotels spread across the city, ensuring comfortable options for every budget.
Things to See in Jodhpur
Most major attractions in Jodhpur are located in the old city, where history, culture, and local life come together.
1. Ghantaghar (The Clock Tower)
It is the bustling heart of Jodhpur. Surrounded by vibrant markets, street food stalls, handicraft vendors, and shops selling traditional Jodhpuri sarees, this area is chaotic yet full of charm.
The Clock Tower itself is a beautiful structure, and visitors can climb to the top by purchasing a ticket. Open to the public from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM.
Cars are allowed only up to the main gate until 10 PM; beyond that, they can enter the old city area. Tuk-tuks/auto-rickshaws, however, can go inside at any time, making them the most convenient mode of transport here.
Must food to try in Jodhpur
Jodhpur is famous for its kachoris and lassi, and no visit is complete without tasting them. The best place to try these iconic snacks is the popular Arora Sweets, located just before the gate to Ghantaghar. The shop is known for:

Sweet and creamy Lassi
A delicious combination of one hot kachori with a glass of lassi is more than enough to keep you full for hours.
Toorji ka Jhalra (Stepwell)
Hidden amidst the old city is the beautiful stepwell known as Toorji ka Jhalra, locally called Bawadi. Tuk-tuks can easily take you there. Right beside the stepwell is Stepwell Café (also known as Café The Stepwell), a popular hangout spot for tourists. You can enjoy a cup of hot tea or some snacks while overlooking the stepwell.
“The Blue City” Streets
The nickname Blue City comes from the cluster of houses painted in deep shades of blue located close to Toorji ka Jhalra. However, the lanes are extremely narrow, crowded, and not very clean. Some places are extremely dirty and is difficult to walk.
Recommendation: Visit this area only if you are particularly keen to photograph the blue houses. Otherwise, you can skip it. You will anyway get a beautiful bird’s-eye view of the Blue City from Mehrangarh Fort without navigating the messy lanes.
Mehrangarh Fort
One of the most magnificent forts in India, Mehrangarh Fort stands tall on a hilltop and is still maintained by the royal family, even though they no longer live here. Both cars and auto-rickshaws can go right up to the entrance.
The approach road is well-built, and the fort offers stunning panoramic views of the entire Blue City, making it one of the best vantage points in Jodhpur.
Visiting Highlights
There is a ticketed lift near the entrance, right next to the ticket counter. You can choose to buy lift tickets along with entry tickets.
You can also walk up, but the ramp is steep.
The lift takes you all the way to the top, from where the views are absolutely mesmerizing.
You can hire a guide or rent an audio device at the ticket office for a detailed tour.
Many areas of the fort are still open for viewing to the public and few of them are closed.
At the exit, there are souvenir shops and a small café to relax before heading out.
You can use the lift to descend or choose to walk down, though the slope is steep.
If you are in Jodhpur, visiting Mehrangarh Fort is an absolute must!
Umaid Bhawan Palace
Umaid Bhawan Palace is one of the last grand palaces built in India, and a section of it is still home to the royal family of Jodhpur. The palace is divided into three parts:
· A heritage museum open to visitors
· A luxury hotel managed by the Taj Group
· The private residence of the royal family
The museum has a ticketed entry and is located on a hilltop. Near the ticket counter, there is a small café for refreshments. Inside the museum, you’ll find an interesting collection of photographs of the royal family with world dignitaries, along with vintage household items and weapons. One of the highlights is the vintage car collection, which is a major attraction for automobile enthusiasts.
Jaswant Thada
On the way to Mehrangarh Fort lies Jaswant Thada, a serene and elegant memorial built in white marble. It sits beside a tranquil lake, making the view even more picturesque. This site serves as the cremation ground for the rulers of Jodhpur, where the cenotaphs (tombs) of the kings have been constructed.
· Visitors are required to remove their shoes before entering the shrine.
· There is a ticketed entry, separate from the Mehrangarh Fort ticket.
Mandore Gardens
Located on the outskirts of the city, Mandore Gardens requires a car or Uber ride from the main city center. Historically, this was also the cremation ground of Hindu kings, and today it houses intricately carved shrines built over their memorial spots.
Mandore Gardens is a sprawling area with:
· Beautiful cenotaphs with stunning stone carvings
· Fountains and small waterfalls
· A temple and landscaped gardens
· An adventure play area
The garden hosts a light and sound show in the evening, though this place is not heavily advertised to tourists. While the architecture here is exquisite, the site needs better maintenance. There are many langurs (large monkeys) in the garden, so it’s wise to keep food items and belongings secure.
Tip: Visit before sunset to fully admire the artistry of the shrines. After dark, very little is visible.
Local Market – Shop for local products like bandhini sarees and suits.
Places to eat in Jodhpur
Jodhpur is a very colourful city with lot of spicy food. Look for a place where lighted Mehrangarh fort is visible. Look for a roof top to eat in the old city area
The fort is lighted at night but only till 9 pm during winters. So better to go early by 7.30 pm to enjoy the views till late. Lal Maas (Mutton) is the delicacy of Jodhpur. Very spicy so please ask them to make a little less spicy if averse to too much spices.
JAISALMER
Traveling from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer is most convenient by road. Although flights to Jaisalmer are available from major cities in India, they operate only during the winter tourist season, typically from October to March. For the rest of the year, flights are not functional to Jaisalmer.
If you are planning to travel between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, taking the road is the better option. The distance is around 250 km and the journey usually takes about 5–6 hours.
While app-based cabs like Uber are available, it is often more reliable to book a private taxi, as drivers sometimes accept the ride on the app but later ask for extra payment beyond the listed fare.
Jaisalmer is famously known as the “Golden City” of Rajasthan because of its distinctive yellow sandstone architecture, which gives the entire city a beautiful golden hue.
There are many hotel options in Jaisalmer, ranging from luxury to budget stays. Some of the best ones include:
Taj Gorbandh Palace – Managed by the Taj Group, this hotel is designed like a royal palace. Since it is relatively newer, everything feels fresh, well-maintained, and elegant.
Jaisalmer Marriott Resort & Spa – A modern and comfortable luxury option offering great hospitality along with all contemporary amenities.
Suryagarh – One of the most luxurious properties in India. It is well known for hosting celebrity weddings and offers a royal desert experience, though it is located slightly outside the main city.
Apart from these, there are plenty of smaller hotels and budget accommodations available within the city.
Things to see
1. Jaisalmer Fort (Sonar Qila)
Also known as Sonar Qila or the “Golden Fort,” this iconic structure is made of yellow sandstone and appears to glow like gold in sunlight.
· Built on a hill, it is visible from almost anywhere in Jaisalmer.
· It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest forts in the world.
· Around 3,000 people still live inside, which is why it is often called a living fort.
Visitor tips:
· Taxis and autos will drop you at the base; you’ll need to walk up to the fort.
· The pathway can be slippery due to smooth, worn-out stones—walk carefully.
Inside the fort:
· You can explore several open areas, shops, and narrow lanes.
· Hiring a guide is recommended, as the history is fascinating and adds depth to the visit.
· Two main palaces—the King’s and Queen’s palaces—are open to visitors.
· Some staircases are steep, which may be difficult for elderly visitors.
From the top, you get a magnificent panoramic view of the entire city of Jaisalmer.
· The royal family no longer resides here but visits on special occasions.
· A historic Jain temple (open till around 4 PM) is located nearby.
· There are also some interesting military exhibits, including a missile display, a short distance away.
2. Patwon Ki Haveli
This is truly one of the architectural marvels of Jaisalmer—seeing is believing perfectly applies here when you witness the level of craftsmanship.
The complex consists of five havelis, built by wealthy Jain merchants known as the Patwa brothers in the early 19th century.
They were prominent traders dealing in precious stones, gold, and silver.
The construction of these havelis took over 50 years to complete.
Built entirely from yellow sandstone, the structure has a golden glow under the desert sun, giving it a timeless and almost magical appearance.

It is the second most visited attraction in Jaisalmer after the Jaisalmer Fort

Out of the five:
Two havelis are the most frequently visited and open to tourists
One haveli is still inhabited, giving you a glimpse of living heritage
Walking through the narrow corridors and beautifully carved interiors gives you a real sense of how opulent merchant life once was in Jaisalmer.
3. Gadisar Lake
Gadisar Lake is a beautiful artificial lake located in the heart of Jaisalmer.
It was originally built in the 12th century by the ruler of Jaisalmer to serve as a water conservation reservoir for the city.
Today, it is connected to the Indira Gandhi Canal, which ensures that the lake rarely dries up.
What to Expect
The lake is surrounded by small kiosks selling Rajasthani jewelry, earrings, and traditional handicrafts
Boating is available and is a relaxing way to enjoy the surroundings
The area has a calm and scenic charm, especially during sunrise and sunset
Special Attraction
The evening light and sound show is quite popular and adds to the overall experience
4. Mandir Palace
Mandir Palace is a 200-year-old royal residence in Jaisalmer.
It was built by Maharawal Moolraj and served as the residence of the royal family.
The palace is a fine example of traditional Rajasthani architecture.
Current Use
A part of the palace has been converted into a heritage hotel
One section functions as a museum, open to visitors with an entry ticket
The royal family still resides in one portion of the palace

The intricate carvings on the façade are exceptionally detailed and beautiful—truly something you need to see in person to appreciate
5. Longewala Border
Located around 100 km from Jaisalmer, this is the border area between India and Pakistan and a place of great historical significance.
The drive to Longewala is scenic, with sand dunes and sparse desert vegetation on both sides

A small war museum displaying tanks and information from the Battle of Longewala

Visiting the Border
Visitors can go close to the Line of Control, but:
A gate pass is required (issued at the checkpost near the temple)
Valid ID proof is mandatory
From the temple, it takes about 45 minutes to reach the actual border point
Important Note
Since the area is under the Indian Army, access depends on the security situation.
In times of tension between the two countries, permits may not be issued
6. Sam Sand Dunes
The Sam Sand Dunes are one of the main highlights of Jaisalmer, and for many tourists, this is the primary reason to visit the city.
Located about 40–45 minutes from Jaisalmer, these dunes offer a true Thar Desert experience
The vast stretches of golden sand create a stunning landscape, especially during sunset

Note: Regular taxis cannot drive into the desert. Only 4x4 vehicles are suitable for dune rides.

It is better to research and choose your camp in advance to avoid being overcharged
Be cautious of pricing:
Jeep rides (2 hours approx.) can be quoted anywhere between ₹5,000–₹10,000 per person if you are unaware of standard rates
Camps usually offer package deals that include jeep safari + camel ride + meals + cultural programs, which are more reasonable

Jodhpur
Ubers and autos are easily available, and the Uber app works perfectly—no need for any additional apps.
If you’re planning dinner at a rooftop restaurant with a view of the beautifully lit Mehrangarh Fort, it’s best to reserve in advance.
Don’t miss trying the famous Pyaz Kachori—it’s a must!
Always bargain when taking autos or tuk-tuks.
The Blue City tour can be skipped if you’re short on time.
Jaisalmer

7. Autos are easily available and can comfortably cover most tourist spots within the city.
